Annual Community Cornfest coming to Phillips Park in Carrick
August 14, 2012
The annual Community Cornfest is coming to Carrick's Phillips Park on Saturday, Aug. 25, from noon to 6 p.m.
Started in the late 1970s, the Cornfest has been a late summer tradition celebrating the Carrick and Overbrook communities, schools and institutions. This year, the Community Cornfest will be held mostly inside the park's facilities and already has commitments from more than 40 groups to participate.
Food offerings include not only the traditional corn, hamburgers and hot dogs, but also hot sausage, barbecued chicken, walking tacos and even Bhutanese food this year.
Six full hours of entertainment is planned and begins with the opening ceremonies at noon by the award winning Pittsburgh Carrick High School Band. The full entertainment schedule includes the Shovin Irish Dancers, Bhutanese Dancers, The Seads, Cathasaigh and three of Jimmy Adler's student bands in that order.
This is the third year the cornfest is being held in Phillips Park at the intersection of Parkfield and Spokane Avenues.
Supporting the Cornfest Committee this year are: PNC Bank, Carrick Branch; Shop ‘n Save Carrick; The Hilltop Alliance; Rep. Harry Readshaw; Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak; Controller Mike Lamb; and, Pittsburgh Citiparks and Public Works departments.
Volunteers who would like to help with children's activities are welcome. Questions or more information can be found by contacting the Carrick Community Council at carrickcommunitycouncil@gmail.com.
